As improvisers, we love to perform. It’s not a shocking statement to declare that most of us a pretty comfortable in front of an audience. But what about when when we’re in the audience? We’ve all been there. There’s a certain set of conflicting emotions and states of mind that we experience when we’re watching, and not performing.
At first glance, meteorologists and improvisers might seem like they have little in common—one predicts the weather, the other creates theatre out of thin air. But when you look closer, both professions revolve around anticipating the unpredictable, adapting in real time, and keeping an audience engaged no matter what comes their way.
Recently, two groups of intrepid improvisers were fortunate to attend intensive workshops run by improviser extraordinaire Patti Stiles. Due to the exercises devised by Patti and the commitment and zeal shown by the workshop attendees, there were also incidental lessons learned in addition to the central tenets of Improv wisdom she imparted. Presented below are what the attendees learned incidentally about improv, life, themselves and each other.
