Sailing onto the Singapore Stage
In September 2024, a team of our intrepid improvisers were lucky enough to travel to and perform at the Singapore Improv Festival. Tara, as one of those plucky performers, gives a rundown of what it was like to represent Improv QLD on the international stage.
When I started my first improv class at Improv QLD in 2022, never did I think that in 2 years time I would be travelling overseas to perform live at the Singapore Improv Festival, but here we are and what an experience it was!
Our team, consisting of Becky, Ella, Glenn, Daniel and Myself, rehearsed for months on our two shows; 'Raising The Bard', a Shakespearean drama set in the modern day, and 'Mates', a grounded story exploring the theme of friendship.
The nerves were high as we waited in the wings of the Stamford Arts Centre in Singapore, but we felt prepared and were ready to "Come on like a boat!", as Glenn would say, and that's what we did. I am proud to say that our team did indeed come onto that stage like boats and delivered not one but two shows that we were immensely proud of. The audience and improv community in Singapore were so wonderful and receptive, and what a way to experience a country and its culture through Art.
We were delighted by many magnificent performances from Improv groups all over the world including a bilingual show by a group from Taipei and a hilariously, energetic and moving show performed by the improv group SPIT, from the Philippines.
The whole experience left me feeling grateful and inspired for the opportunity to not only perform with an awesome and supportive team but to also experience Singapore in a way I never would have otherwise.
