August Drop-In Class: The Snake, The Goblin and the Briefcase

  • Ithaca Hall 95-99 Enoggera Terrace Red Hill, QLD, 4059 Australia (map)

TEACHER OF THE MONTH: Adam O'Sullivan

TOPIC OF THE MONTH: The Snake, The Goblin and the Briefcase - Playing Non-Human Characters

Step out of your comfort zone and play something totally inhuman!

Playing a human, especially a heightened version of yourself, is one of the safest choices you can make in an improv scene. But what about playing a floorboard, the TV, the mouse in the walls or the monster that lives under the bed? Spice up your improv scenes by playing inhuman characters. Stop being a fly on the wall and literally become a fly on the wall!

In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to create characters using onjects and animals around you

  • Physically portray your character to entertain the audience without saying a word

  • Developing the voice of inhuman and inanimate objects

  • Have an opportunity to play non-human characters against human and fellow non-human characters to see how they interact

  • Discover (or re-discover) how fun it is to break out of the human mould!

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:

Adam has studied Theatre Studies and Secondary Teaching at QUT. He started doing improv with Improv Queensland in 2016 and now works with both IQ and Big Fork Theatre. Throughout the years, Adam has been involved in IQ shows such as Murder At The Bowlo and Heartfelt High & Big Fork's Cool Story Bro, Infinite Skies and Around the Campfire. He produced and hosted a Doctor Who podcast called D4WH, from which an improvised radio play was performed at the inaugural Brisbane Improv Festival. He has been fortunate enough to travel, performing improv at Auckland Improv Festival, New Zealand Improv Festival and Manila Improv Festival. Adam hardly ever plays a human character and is more likely to be found supporting his scene partners by being an extra arm, head or tentacle.
